When I first became interested in pottery I liked that pottery was both art, craft, and science. It has relevance historically to modern day. Pottery is using the knowledge of chemistry to produce colour and texture. You are using a surface form with knowledge of a craft, then actually using elements to create all kinds of texture and colour as surface design. It makes pottery a fascinating experience.
I like experimenting with all kinds of clay, techniques and firing processes. Right now I use a red clay and do electric oxidation firing, medium range. What is most important to me is that a piece is aesthetic, people enjoy it, and it can be shared and used in a practical way every day. This is what I enjoy most about this body of work.
Here where I live there is a lush green that is persistent through the year. Arbutus trees shed bark and blossoms fall; petals and pieces once part of a whole. I like the perspective of looking past object to empty space. This is the sort of images I am thinking about in my use of these specific colours and clay. This image makes me feel like I am sitting in a garden, or out in nature somewhere having a cup of coffee saying to myself … this just sitting in a garden having this cup of coffee is pretty beautiful.
